Course Overview

This course provides an introductory overview of wind turbine blade testing, focusing on why blades are tested, which tests are performed, and which international standards govern blade test activities. The course is designed for participants who need a conceptual and standards-oriented understanding of blade testing. ​

The course introduces the purpose and scope of the main international standards for wind turbine blade testing and explains how these standards are used to determine appropriate test requirements for different blade designs and test objectives. Participants will gain insight into how certification, design verification, and quality assurance drive blade testing activities across the wind industry. ​

The course also covers the main types of blade testing, including static, fatigue, modal, subcomponent, and full-scale blade tests. For each test type, the course explains the underlying purpose, typical test setup, and expected outcomes, enabling participants to understand what each test demonstrates about blade performance and structural integrity. ​

At a high level, the course introduces the basic principles behind static and fatigue test design and the role of simulation in test planning, without going into advanced modelling techniques. Common blade test equipment and measurement systems are presented from a functional perspective, helping participants understand what is measured, why it is measured, and which equipment is typically used to meet standard blade test objectives.

After completion of this course, you will gain the ability to:

  • + Explain the purpose and scope of the main international standards for wind turbine blade testing, and identify which standards are relevant for common blade test scenarios.
  • + Describe the main types of blade testing, including static, fatigue, modal, subcomponent, and full-scale tests, and explain the purpose and expected outcomes of each test type.
  • + Recognize the key steps involved in static and fatigue blade test design and simulation at an introductory level, and interpret basic test setups and example results.
  • + Explain the function of common blade test equipment and measurement systems, and relate typical equipment choices to standard blade test objectives.

  • + The course is designed to be manageable alongside a busy professional schedule. The main learning activities take place during the live online sessions, supported by preparatory materials and assignments distributed through the learning platform, DTU Learn. Participants will be introduced to key concepts, standards, test types, and example-based applications.
  • + The course is delivered online or onsite through two live half-day sessions, combining lectures, worked examples, and hands-on assignments, with the live sessions providing the main structure for learning.
  • + Teaching is supported by preparatory materials and assignments distributed through DTU Learn. Participants will be introduced to the purpose and scope of blade testing standards, the main types of blade tests, and the basic principles behind static and fatigue test design and simulation.
