Wind Turbine Control

Course Overview

This course introduces the fundamentals of wind turbine control systems, including modelling, analysis and synthesis, with emphasis on offshore energy applications. Students learn how to represent wind turbines as control system objects by modelling their mechanical, aerodynamic and electrical subsystems, as well as wind as an external disturbance. Operational aspects such as energy conversion efficiency, mechanical loading, power quality, and operating modes are considered. Different control strategies are studied, including yaw control, pitch control, torque control, stall regulation, active load control, and generator slip control. Practical knowledge is reinforced through laboratory exercises, linking theoretical models with industrial applications in offshore wind farms.

MAIN GOAL

To provide students with theoretical foundations and practical skills in modelling and applying wind turbine control systems for industrial use, particularly in offshore energy systems.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should gain and/or be able to;

    • + Model and analyse wind turbine subsystems (aerodynamic, mechanical, electrical).
    • + Application of advanced control strategies for wind turbines.
    • + Skills in technical communication and analysis in English.
    • + Capability to design or modify turbine control systems with consideration of technical, operational, and economic factors.
